Whether the occasion is a housewarming, birthday, holiday, or “just because,” wine gifts are an excellent way to show you care. Although any wine gift will most likely be appreciated by the recipient, it is important to be thoughtful and tasteful in your selection. If purchasing a wine gift for a dinner party, for instance, keep in mind the meal that will be served. Typically, richer, heavier foods, such as Italian meals pair well with red wines such as Merlot or Sangria, whereas lighter foods like fish, desserts and fruits are best served with white wines. Also note the temperature at which you serve the wine (a Merlot, for instance, is generally served at room temperature), and whether the wine you choose needs to rest or aerate. The personal taste of the recipient should also be considered. No matter what you choose, however, a mid-priced, high-quality bottle of wine is a sure way to please.
