Michelle Obama has made it her mission to fight against childhood obesity. It’s no secret that childhood obesity has become an epidemic over the last 30 years or so. Researchers attribute this to many factors. One theory is that play time of today’s youth now consists of “sitting” fun such as playing video games or surfing the internet as opposed to the outdoor games that used to give children of the past more physical activity. Another theory is that the budget cuts that school’s face have forced them to cut non-education programs such as recess and gym, while at the same time serving cheaper and less nutritional foods in the cafeteria.
Before first lady Obama’s campaign to end childhood obesity, society felt the need to uplift our overweight children. “Be yourself” and “Real size” promotions were seen in dress up games, message boards, and ad campaigns encouraging young girls not to fall victim to the “only skinny is beautiful” modelesque stereotypes.
Both of these extremes are very good initiatives, and a good healthy balance between both needs to be encouraged.
